Staffordshire won this return match, between the two top teams in the Championship, by nine wickets at 5.45 pm on the second day, after putting Bedfordshire in to bat. The win ensured Staffordshire won the Championship for the first time, though this was not recognised in a number of newspaper reports. The game between the two sides at Bedford in July had been won by Bedfordshire. For the winners, there were 5 fours in Page's 56 and Barnes took 9 wickets in the match for 101 runs. For Bedfordshire, Rice's 56 contained 3 fours. When Barnes bowled Holdstock in the Bedfordshire first innings, he took his one hundredth wicket of the season for Staffordshire. The feat had previously been accomplished by G J Thompson for Northamptonshire on two occasions, in 1901 with 103 wickets and 1902 with 100 wickets. Barnes was to set a new record for the Championship with 10? wickets.
[Missing: Total championship wickets taken by Barnes in season.]
