It was the first time Northamptonshire had defeated Surrey 2nd XI at Northampton in this the fifth season that the sides had met in championship fixtures. For the winners, there was 1 six and 8 fours in Horton's 73 and 5 fours in Pool's 59. The 4 catches held by Papillon in the Surrey second innings equalled the Championship record achieved on 11 previous occasions. The five catches he held in the match were the most in the season, equalled by two others. For the losers, there was 1 five and 4 fours, and 5 fours respectively in Goatly's two innings of 51 and 54. In the Surrey 2nd XI first innings Davis was hit in the face by a rising ball from East and was forced to retire from the match.
