Drawn return match with bad light halting play at 5.45 pm on the second day. Northumberland had won the game when the two sides met at Stoke in June. For the visitors there were centuries by Hollowood with 132 and Harrison with 103. They put on 127 for the fourth wicket in the Staffordshire first innings, which was a new record for the competition and the highest fourth wicket partnership of the season. Harrison was involved in further partnerships of 69 with Briscoe for the seventh wicket, and 53 with Mainwaring for the eighth wicket. Hollowood's run aggregate for the match of 172 was a new record for the competition, but was beaten later in the month when H K Foster of Worcestershire scored his 176 v Hertfordshire at Watford. For the home side, Butler's 77 included 10 fours and Thompson's 57 7 fours. The match aggregate of 773 runs was second highest of the season, and the Staffordshire first innings score of 383 the third highest.
