Overnight rain delayed the start until 3.57pm. Bad light stopped play at 5.07pm and play restarted at 5.32pm. No play was possible on the second day. Play was agin delayed on the third day due to a waterlogged pitch, finally starting at 1.30pm. Essex declared their innings, and Middlesex forfeited their first innings.
