This match had twice been postponed. It was originally scheduled for Nov 14-16 but a group of spectators invaded the Feroz Shah Kotla ground and dug up the pitch, the Board ordering a replay for Jan 23-25. On that day two factions, the Delhi and District Cricket Association and the Delhi State Cricketers Association both had captains named, respectvely S Amarnath and BS Bedi. The Punjab captain won the toss against Bedi, but was asked by the umpires (I Sivaraman and KS Sunderam) to toss again with Amarnath. Umesh Kumar said he would have to consult with Punjab officials and the match was called off. A court order was made on Feb 6 directing the Delhi and District Cricket Association and its office bearers not to interfere with the normal function of the match and barred them from selecting or announcing a team for this match. An 18 member squad was named by an ad hoc committee including the Delhi State Cricketers Association.
