From The Times of 28 Aug 1850: "It is proper to state that this match was got up for the purpose of propriating such proceeds as it might realise to three charitable institutions connected with the great body of licensed victuallers, and we anticipate that in this instance the effort will prove to have been most satisfactory. It will be seen by the list of names that nearly all the leading brewers' and distillers' firms were represented either by partners, their sons, or some influential representative of the respective establishment. There was a great deal of fine cricket exhibited during the play."
