The captains agreed to call the game off at the end of the second day because Taranaki had no chance of an outright victory so Hutt Valley qualified to challenge for the Hawke Cup due to their first innings lead. This allowed the Hutt Valley team to travel home early on Sunday, 19 January and meant the South Taranaki players in the Taranaki team didn't have to travel through to New Plymouth again for what was probably going to be very little play on the third day.
