AW Short was struck on the shoulder by a hit from RA Pierce in the final session on the first day and was forced to leave the field which resulted in him being unable to open the batting due to the injury
In the match following their record score in 1983/84 Nelson again exceeded this making 649.
In the last game of the season they again broke their previous record when they scored 643 against North Canterbury.
The 649 stood as the record for a further nine seasons until exceeded by Manawatu who made 650 for 9 decl against South Canterbury in 1993/94.
