Steve Selwood had a reasonably short First-class career, and is unfortunate in that the most notable aspect of his time in the County game was his highest score being 99. This was against Worcestershire in August 2002, and came after every batsmans worst nightmare namely having to spend an evening undefeated and just one run away on 99*. Selwood was signed by Derbyshire late in the 2001 season, after he had played a starring role in Loughborough Universitys UCCE championship winning season. In a sustained run in 2002 & 2003 he did produce innings of promise. What was most pleasing was his adaptability in the Championship he could dig in and play unhurriedly, where as in limited-overs matches he could up the tempo with some boundary laden innings. His left arm spin was certainly serviceable, and his occasional performances with the ball suggested he could be a perfectly competent 6th bowler. His final First-class match was against the West Indian tourists of 2004, where a 68 ball innings of 5 in the First innings illustrated a player whose defensive abilities had now taken over to the detriment of his game. After his release at the end of 2004, he has gone on to play for several league sides across the country, where his batting is back to being sparklingly aggressive.
