Migrating to the UK in 1971, he remained in the country apart from 1977-1980 when he returned briefly to Srinagar.

 

He was appointed deputy director to the UK Immigrants Advisory Service in 1984 and from 1990 to 1997 he was the became deputy legal director and head of litigation at the Campaign for Racial Equality.

 

He was a co-founder of the Muslim Council of Britain in 1997 and was appointed as Britain's first Muslim judge in 1996.
