The big guns failed to boom but young turks Surabh Tiwary and Ambati Rayudu ensured that the Mumbai juggernaut rolled imperiously and in that process crushed the visiting Deccan Chargers in the DLF IPL 3 match at Brabourne Stadium, Mumbai on Saturday.

 

Mumbai Indians crushed Deccan Chargers by 63 runs to head the points table with their sixth win. After being laid low by the assault of Tiwary and Rayudu, Deccan found Mumbai bowlers too hot to handle and Zaheer, Harbhajan, Pollard and MacLaren shared the spoils with two wickets each.

 

Chasing 179 for a win, Deccan was crippled at the start due to injury sustained by their skipper Gilchrist who in a collision with Rayudu hurt himself. Gibbs struck a few elegant boundaries but mistimed a pull off Zaheer to be caught by Tendulkar. Laxman ran himself out in a horrendous mix-up and Zaheer yorked Gilchrist. By the start of the seventh over Deccan had their backs to the wall. The dangerman Symonds struck a few lusty blows but missed a straight ball from MacLaren to be bowled. Thereafter Deccan lost wickets in a hurry to be dismissed for 115.

 

Tendulkar and Dhawan put up another 50-run stand. The difference here was that Tendulkar had most of the strike and displayed vintage touch to steal boundaries of the bowlers. The introduction of spin put skids to Mumbai’s charge. Shikar Dhawan sashayed out for the big shot off Ojha but was beaten and Gilchrist had an easy stumping. Rahul Sharma trapped Tendulkar plump in front and Bravo was cleaned up by Ojha as Mumbai slumped to 62 for three after nine overs.

 

Tiwary and Rayudu found themselves in a similar situation and repaired the damage with sensible batting. Tiwary opened up towards the latter part of his innings striking the big shots. The duo added 65 runs for the fourth wickets to lay foundation for the final charge. Tiwary, who struck three sixes in his belligerent knock, fell trying for his fourth as he holed out to Harris in the deep. Rayudu then took over the mantle of scoring with Kieron Pollard. The two put the Deccan attack to sword and added quick runs. Jaskaran Singh was biffed for 20 runs as Rayudu struck two fours and a six. Harris disappeared for 14 runs in the last over as Mumbai posted a competitive total which at one stage looked highly unlikely.
