WHITING, Algernon Oswald.
Amateur.
Born at Kensington, London, 23rd April 1861.
Died at Worcester Park, Surrey, 23rd January 1931
. Educated at Charterhouse and then Sherborne, he went up to Merton College, Oxford, where he played for the University at Cricket in 1881-82, winning his blue both years. He went to be a tea planter at Pituaratti Malie, Haputate, Ceylon, where he continued to play cricket, as a wicket-keeper.
At the time of the 1881 Census he was staying at the Steyne Hotel, 24 Steyne, Broadwater, Sussex, aged 19 and a student of Oxford University, with his brother Percy F., aged 22, living on dividends. There are two other visitors at the hotel which was run by James Lee Carpenter, aged 47, and his wife Elizabeth M., aged 33, who have six sons and one daughter under the aged of eight. There are nine domestic servants.
