WHITFIELD, Herbert.
Amateur.
Born at Hamsey, Lewes, Sussex, 15th November 1858.
Died at Chailey, Sussex, 6th May 1909.
The son of G. Whitfield, of Hamsey House, Lewes, Sussex, he was educated at Eton, where he was a member of the cricket eleven 1875-77, being captain in his last year. He went up to Trinity College, Cambridge, and represented the University 1878-81, winning his blue all four years. He also ran in the mile for Cambridge University and in the real tennis doubles partnered by the Hon Ivo Bligh. He gained his B.A. in 1881. He played in 75 first-class matches, 39 of them being for Sussex, who he captained in 1883 and 1884. His last first-class match was for I Zingari in 1889. He was a banker, becoming a Local Director of Barclays Bank and living at Old Bank House, Lewes. his brother Francis Barry Whitfield also played in one match for Sussex and his nephew George Sullivan Whitfield played three times in 1908.
No trace of him can be found in the 1881 Census, but his brother Francis Barry Whitfield can be found at the High Street, Lewes, aged 28 and a banker, with his wife Isabel, aged 27, born in Birkenhead, Cheshire, and son George Sullivan, aged 3. They have four domestic servants.
