WEBBE, Alexander Josiah.
Amateur.
Born at Bethnal Green, London, 16th January 1855.
Died at Fulvens Hoe, Abinger Hammer, Surrey, 19th February 1941.
A son of A.A. Webbe, of 19 Portland Place, London, W., he was educated at Harrow where he was a member of the cricket eleven 1872-74, being captain in 1874. He was also a member of the football eleven 1873. He went up to Trinity College, Oxford, and represented his University at cricket 1875-78, being captain in his last two years. He also won his blue at rackets, doubles in 1876, and singles and doubles in 1877-78.
He first played for Middlesex in 1875 and played 370 first-class matches in all, 247 for Middlesex and one Test Match. He was captain of the county 1885-98, secretary 1900-22 and president 1923-36. He was a member of the M.C.C. Committee between 1886 and 1909. He does not seem to have had any necessity to find paid employment.
His brothers Herbert Ross Webbe played for Oxford University & Middlesex and George Allan Webbe played for the MCC and Dorset.
At the time of the 1881 Census he was staying at the Dalvina Shooting Cottage, Farr, Sutherland, Scotland, aged 26, B.A., Oxford, with T. Sherwin Pearson and George F. Vernon, who both also played for Middlesex. John MacBeth, aged 47, was the gamekeeper and his wife Mary was aged 34. There was one domestic servant.
