TYLECOTE, Henry Grey.
Amateur.
Born at Marston Mortain Rectory, Ampthill, Bedfordshire, 24th July 1853.
Died at Summertown, Oxford, 8th March 1935.
He was the son of the Rev. Canon T. Tylecote, of Marston Mortain, Bedfordshire, and the brother of Edward Ferdinando Sutton Tylecote (Oxford University and Kent). He was educated at Clifton College, where he was a member of the cricket eleven 1870-73, being captain 1872 and 1873. He went up to New College, Oxford, and was a member of the University cricket eleven 1874-77, winning his blue all four years. He also played for the MCC and took part in a total of 29 first-class matches. He represented Oxford v Cambridge in the mile race in 1877. He played county cricket for Bedfordshire (1876-83, being captain for two years) and Hertfordshire (1884-1900, also being captain for two years). He became a schoolteacher at The Golden Parsonage Preparatory School, Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire. He coached cricket to the Public Schools and the Royal Navy from 1884.
The 1881 Census finds him a schoolmaster at Elstree School, in Middlesex, where his elder brother Charles B.L., aged 33, was also teaching, and another brother Edward F.S., aged 31, is a visiting instructor in mathematics. None of the brothers is married and Henry, aged 27, is described as Oxford B.A., schoolmaster. Vernon R.F.A. Royle (Oxford University, Lancashire and England) was also teaching at Elstree at that time.
