ROBINSON, Walter.
Professional.
Born at Greetland, Yorkshire, 29th November 1851.
Died in England, 14th August 1919.
He learnt his cricket in Yorkshire, but first went out as a professional in Lancashire, with the Haslingden Club 1873 and 1874. In 1875 he was with Cliffe End, Longwood, near Huddersfield and in 1876 and 1877 at Bacup. Yorkshire gave him a chance during 1876-77, when he played for them seven times, but without success. In 1878 he moved to the Littleborough Club, in Lancashire, where he stayed until1885, qualifying by residence, for Lancashire for whom he played 115 matches 1880-88. In 1886 he was back at Haslingden for a year and then moved to Colne 1887-90, before taking up an engagement at St.Helens Recreation (Pilkingtons Glass) where he stayed until 1898. Thereafter it is believed he was for a short time with the Prescot Club.
Virtually nothing is known of this mans activities off the cricket field.
The only man who fits and can be found in the 1881 Census is Walter Robinson, aged 31, a cloth fuller, born in Mirfield, who lived at Green Side, Mirfield, Yorkshire, with his wife Emma, aged 30, born Wakefield and his son George A., aged 5, born Mirfield. It is by no means certain that this is the man however.
