Gwyn Evans had an extended trial with Glamorgan in 1939, after the young seam bowler had impressed playing for Oxford University.

The North Walian youngster had gone up to Brasenose College, Oxford in 1936, and in his second year in residence had broken into the Oxford team as a free scoring lower order batsman and a quite brisk seam bowler. The following year, he won a Blue and after taking 6/80 against Leicestershire, he was invited to have a trial with Glamorgan.
Evans made his debut against the West Indian tourists at the Arms Park, and his lively bowling earned him an extended run in the county side. Some felt that he might be a long-term replacement for Jack Mercer who was poised to retire, but this was not to be, as after the Second World War, Evans opted for a career in education and moved to Leicestershire.
After success in club cricket in the Leicester area, Evans returned to county cricket in 1949 when he played a season for Leicestershire and won his county cap.
