LUCAS, Frederick Murray.
Amateur.
Born at Sisters House, Clapham Common, London, 3rd February 1860.
Died at Suat, India, 7th November 1887.
The son of Charles Thomas Lucas, of Warnham Court Mansion, Warnham, Sussex, a building contractor, he was educated at Marlborough, where he was in the cricket eleven 1876-77. He went up to Trinity College, Cambridge, where he played for the University but did not get his blue. He played for Suffolk in 1879 and the following year played in the first of his 28 first-class matches, 18 of them for Sussex, which he captained in 1886. Three of his brothers played first-class cricket, A.G. for MCC, C.J. for Middlesex and Sussex and M.P. for Sussex. His nephew C.E. also played for Sussex. He was also a good rackets player and represented Cambridge University.
He became a brewer at Leamington, but sailed for India for the benefit of his health and while there went up-country to shoot game, caught cholera and died.
In the 1881 Census he was living at Warnham Court Mansion, Sussex, with his father Charles Thomas aged 60 a contractor (builder), and his mother Emma, aged 57. His unmarried aunt Anne Lucas aged 63 is also present. His brother Charles James aged 28 and his brother Alfred George, aged 26 and his wife Edith, aged 25 and born in Madras, India, plus their three children Eveline aged 3, Sybil aged 2 and Muriel 3 months are in residence. He is shown aged 21 and his sister Florence aged 16 is also resident. There are four visitors – James Sterolts Forbes, a railway director, aged 56, born Scotland; Lt-Col Gould Smith, a banker, aged 41, born London; his wife L. Charelaine Smith, aged 35, a non-British subject, born Switzerland; Charlotte De Reese, aged 42, unmarried, a non-British subject, born in Russia. There is a housekeeper and nineteen domestic servants.
